I am not sure that we missed it, as it might not have been a target after all. Klinsmann said that he has the team that he needs and knowing Klinsmann's approach to the game I am not convinced that he will be willing to spend all the money that it had required to bring Hleb, if that was the case we would have been selling at least one midfielder (most likely Schweinsteiger) What are we winning doing that? Hleb is a better midfielder but he is also older.
I favor Schweinsteiger over him because:
- He is younger so he can develop further
- He has worked under Klinsmann before and showed world clase performances
- He has been at Bayern for 10 years now so he does not have to adapt to anything.
- He is better in defense than Hleb
On a side note we have almost a half dozen players that can play on Hleb's position: Besides Schweini, Altintop, Sosa, Kroos, Ottl and Borowski. True that none of them is at Hleb's level, but most of them are younger and one of some will make the big jump. Look at Ribery himself, he struggled to find himself until he was 23, then went from talented average to one of the best in the world. I am convinced that Klinsmann will make most of our players excel and I am convinced that we do not need Hleb.
Bayern should not become the next Madrid or Arsenal buying over-prized superstars, it will be at the expense of selling homegrown players full of potential, at that point I will not care anymore about Bayern, what will be de difference between Bayern and Arsenal, or Bayern and Chelsea? IMO, Football clubs can not escape the effects of the XXI Century with free labor movement and globalization but clubs should not lose their identity.
Bayern is more than 50% German and 25% Bavarian, with the remaining 50% being very diverse between Europeans and SouthAmericans, the only thing missing is at least one African player. Few of the top European clubs can compare to Bayern in preserving identity.

I don't think that Arsenal buy overpriced players. I think it's the contrary. Wenger buy inexpensive young players and they become expensive. But I agree with you about Bayern preserving its identity. I think Kuffour was the last African player with Bayern (not counting Joseph Ngwenya). I would like to see an African and Asian player too but not now since 24 players are enough. |

We had and have Africans in the reserve team, but they have been unable to break into the first team.
As regards Hleb, Bayern pulled the plug on the transfer when it seemed like he was going to come to Bayern. They figured that he would halt the development of the young midfielders at Bayern (Schweinsteiger, Sosa, Kroos, Ottl). |
